The Australian Inland Botanic Gardens is beginning to develop programs for plant conservation, education and research. These will expand as development of Stage 1 nears completion. As the only botanic garden in NSW and Victoria specialising in arid-adapted (<250mm rainfall) species, the AIBG has an important role to play in growing, conserving and researching the relatively little-known flora of the drier areas of the eastern states. But the AIBGs unique environment is also ideal for most of the rich native flora of the continents vast, arid interior the rangelands which constitutes more than 70 per cent of Australias area. By developing special areas with acidic conditions, the Gardens could also become an important conservation and research centre for Australias rich woodland and heathland floras, which harbour many of the worlds most spectacular and horticulturally desirable flowering plants. |
