An administrative committee manages the Gardens with help and advice from six specialised sub-committees. The AIBG is listed with the Council of Australian Botanic Gardens, and is a member of the London- based Botanic International. Unlike most Australian botanic gardens, which are owned and funded by state or local governments, it is independent, relying on donations, or in kind services from individuals, companies or philanthropic trusts and grants from state agencies and local government. Botanic gardens consultant John Wrigley (inaugural Director of the National Botanic Gardens, Canberra) produced the master plan for the Gardens, including recommendations for their development. Most early development work involved volunteer labour. The first of six full-time employees was appointed in 1992. They receive occasional help from casual workers from Government training schemes, TAFE students on field projects, tradesmen who donate their time, and the Friends of the Gardens group, established in 1988. |
